Die Südstaaten sind eine Großregion im Südosten der USA. Nach der geografisch orientierten Definition des United States Census Bureau bestehen die Südstaaten aus insgesamt 16 Staaten mit knapp 100 Millionen Einwohnern auf 2.384.143 km². Es handelt sich um jene 15 eher östlichen Bundesstaaten, die südlich der Mason-Dixon-Linie, der Grenze zwischen Pennsylvania und Maryland, liegen und in denen bis 1865 die Sklavenhaltung erlaubt war, sowie Oklahoma, das erst 1907 gegründet wurde.
美国南部（英语：Southern United States，或 American South）也经常被简称为美南、迪克西、或直接称为南部，构成了美国南部至东南部的一片广大地区。这个地区带有相当特殊的文化和历史背景，包括了早期欧洲殖民时期留下的痕迹、对于州权原则的坚持、早期的奴隶制度、以及在联盟国分离时于美国内战中受到的冲击，该地发展出了美国其他地区相异的独特文学、音乐、料理等文化传统。

Die Chesapeake Bay [ˈtʃɛsəpik ˈbeɪ] ist die größte Flussmündung in den USA. Sie ist eine südwärts zum Atlantik hin verlaufende Bucht desselben zwischen der Delmarva-Halbinsel im Osten und dem nordamerikanischen Festland im Westen und von den Bundesstaaten Virginia und Maryland umgeben, für die sie eine der bedeutendsten Naturlandschaften darstellt.
Der Name Chesepiooc bedeutete in der Algonkin-Sprache der Indianerstämme Powhatan und Nanticoke, die hier ansässig waren, vermutlich „Großer Fluss“, oder bezeichnete vielleicht ein Dorf an der Mündung des Gewässers zur offenen See.[1] 1607 errichteten englische Kolonisten im James River die Kolonie Jamestown, die die erste erfolgreiche Kolonie Englands in Nordamerika wurde. Ihr Anführer John Smith erkundete als erster Europäer im Jahr 1608 Teile der Bucht und ihre südlichen Zuflüsse.
