Vor allem drei große Gebirgszüge machen das Skifahren in den Vereinigten Staaten möglich: Zum einen sind dies die Rocky Mountains, die die sogenannten Mountain States durchqueren (Colorado, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho und Utah). Die Cascades Range zieht sich von Kanada über Oregon bis hinunter nach Kalifornien. Im Osten der USA befinden sich zudem die Appalachen.

Amerikanischer Wein
Insgesamt werden in den USA mehr als 180 verschiedene Weinanbaugebiete voneinander unterschieden, wobei sowohl geographische als auch klimatische Gegebenheiten bei der Unterscheidung berücksichtigt wurden. Die weitaus größte Produktion stammt nach wie vor aus den Gebieten in California, Oregon und Washington. Hier ist auch der Sitz der Firma Gallo, die ein Viertel aller US-Weinverkäufe auf sich verbuchen kann. Weitere wichtige Anbauregionen sind die Rocky Mountains, der Mittlere Westen, der Südwesten der USA, die nördliche East Coast und die Region rund um die Great Lakes.

Die ersten Spuren von Weinanbau in den USA gehen zurück zu den ersten Siedlern, die schon im 16. Jahrhundert in den Kolonien versucht hatten, aus den vorgefundenen Trauben Wein zu machen. Mit dem weiteren Zuzug von europäischen Siedlern wurden das Verfahren und die Qualität der gewonnenen Tropfen verbessert. In der Prohibition zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde die Weinproduktion in den USA so gut wie trocken gelegt und es entstand ein Rückstand der amerikanischen Winzer im Vergleich mit den Anbietern aus dem Rest der Welt. Erst mit dem akademischen Herangehen an die Herausforderungen des Weinbaus durch Universitäten in New York und California wurden die bestehenden Qualitätsprobleme gelöst und der Weg wurde frei für die Expansion des amerikanischen Weingeschäfts auf den Weltmarkt.

Die Rechtsvorgaben für amerikanische Weinbauer sorgten in der jüngeren Vergangenheit häufig für neue Schwierigkeiten, da es den Winzern in den USA erlaubt ist, in Europa geschützte Bezeichnungen wie zum Beispiel Champagner  zu verwenden.(Quelle:http://www.americanet.de/weinanbau.html
