OS/390是IBM公司开发的一种操作系统，常用于S/390大型主机系列中。OS/390是从一个最近被命名为MVS的系统演化而来的，这种MVS（多虚拟存储）系统是IBM公司的一种长期的、稳定的大型主机操作系统。MVS系统据说可以解决世界上任何一种问题,工资、应收款项、交易处理、数据库管理以及其他针对世界上的大型企业定制的应用程序都可以运行在MVS系统中。尽管MVS更加类似于一种集中控制的单片机系统，近几年IBM公司还是成功的将其重新定位为大型服务器系统.这种大型服务器系统可以应用在面向网络的分布环境中，可以用于三层应用程序模型中。
由于MVS系统开创了操作系统的一个新纪元，而且目前仍然有许多旧的MVS系统处于运行状态，因此看起来“MVS” 这个经典的缩写仍将沿用一段时间。由于OS/390也保持了UNIX用户以及程序界面，因此可以将OS/390同时用于MVS系统以及UNIX系统中去。 OS/390以及早期的MVS系统上面的应用程序是用通用商业面向语言COBOL(COmmon Business Oriented Language)开发的，而其上的处理程序则源于客户信息管理系统CICS。甚至连用PL/I以及公式翻译器写成的老旧程序也可以在这两个系统中运行。 老式的应用程序采用虚拟内存控制方法来进行文件管理以及虚拟通信访问方法，这些方法可以有效的同用户进行通话。当然，目前的主流编程环境仍然是C和C++语言。主流数据库包括IBM的DB2。不过OS/390的UNIX环境上也可以运行Java程序。
