苏丹唯一海港，红海省首府。在红海西岸。人口20.7万（1983）。1906-1909年建港。承担全国95%的出口和90%的进口运输任务，输出棉花、阿拉伯树胶、花生、芝麻、畜产品等。有较大炼油厂和船舶修理、轧棉、金属加工、食品等工业。附近盛产食盐，可供全国需要。铁路、航空和输油管通喀土穆。
