赤山法華院赤山法华院

山东法华院又名赤山法华院，是位于山东省威海市荣成市石岛镇北部的赤山南麓，始建于唐代，是一处情系中、日、韩三国人民友谊的佛教寺院。据史书记载，赤山法华院为唐代新罗人（今韩国）张保皋所建。唐宪宗二年（807年），张保皋应征入唐，因武艺超群，作战勇敢，被提升为武宁（今徐州）军中小将，深受大唐将士的爱戴。当时石岛湾一些村庄里有很多新罗人居住着，他们几乎人人信仰佛教。为了让家乡的人能有精神依托，也为了“光宗耀祖”行善事，张保皋于唐穆宗三年（823年）征得唐政府的同意，在赤山浦（今石岛湾）建立禅院。因此山周围山石皆为红色，相传有赤山神保佑当地众生，又因建院时请来诵经的首批僧人属天台宗派，读诵《法华经》，故此院取名为“赤山法华院”。
