位于安庆市潜山县西部的天柱山，又名潜山、皖山、皖公山（安徽省简称“皖”由此而来）、万岁山、万山等。为大别山山脉东延的一个组成部分（或称余脉）。一般指潜山县境内以其主峰天柱峰为中心的山地，有时也指其主峰。据1980年航空测定，主峰海拔为1488.4米，规划保护区面积为333平方公里，风景区面积为82.46平方公里，中心位置（天柱峰）地理座标东经116°27′，北纬30°43′。

天柱山因独特的自然景观，名列安徽省三大名山之一（黄山、九华山、天柱山）。早在汉武帝时就封为“南岳”，历代都有人文活动。建国后开发为风景名胜区，景区于2011年获AAAAA级旅游景区称号。 2011年9月被联合国教科文组织正式批准成为世界地质公园。
