圆通寺位于昆明市区内的圆通街，是昆明最古老的佛教寺院之一，已有1200多年的建寺历史。同时它也是昆明市内最大的寺院。它始建于唐朝南诏时代，初名补陀罗寺。元朝大德五年(公元1301年(辛丑年))建圆通寺，元朝皇帝“赐玺书嘉”。扩建工程历时18年，直到元延祐六年(公元1319年(己未年))才告完成。明朝时，圆通寺得到扩建，山顶又新建接引殿。清朝时也得到多次重修。
