坦赞铁路是一条贯通东非和中南非的交通大干线，是东非交通动脉。东起坦桑尼亚的达累斯萨拉姆，西迄赞比亚中部的卡皮里姆波希，全长1860.5公里（其中在坦桑尼亚境内长约960公里，赞比亚境内长约884公里）。1970年10月28日正式动工， 1975年6月7日全线铺通，同年10月23日全面建成并试运营。1976年7月14日，坦赞铁路通车，中国正式移交给坦、赞两国政府。
