Das erste sichere Datum in der Geschichte des Schlosses ist der 25. Juli 998, als der Markgraf Hugo von Toskana es der Kirche schenkte, in der Hoffnung, seine Seele vor dem drohenden Ende der Welt im Jahr 1000 zu retten. Es handelte sich um ein sehr bedeutendes, reiches und mächtiges Benediktinerkloster an der alten Route der Via Francigena, einer obligatorischen Station für Pilgerfahrten nach Rom.

Das erste sichere Datum in der Geschichte des Schlosses ist der 25. Juli 998, als der Markgraf Hugo von Toskana es der Kirche schenkte, in der Hoffnung, seine Seele vor dem drohenden Ende der Welt im Jahr 1000 zu retten. Es handelte sich um ein sehr bedeutendes, reiches und mächtiges Benediktinerkloster an der alten Route der Via Francigena, einer obligatorischen Station für Pilgerfahrten nach Rom.

Aufgrund seiner militärstrategischen Lage wurde es im 16. Jahrhundert im Krieg zwischen Florenz und Siena zerstört und 1886 im neugotischen Stil wieder aufgebaut.
