Er war von 2013 bis 2018 Vorsitzender der Partito Democratico (PD) sowie von Februar 2014 bis Dezember 2016 Präsident des Ministerrats der Italienischen Republik. Seit September 2019 ist er Anführer der von ihm gegründeten Partei Italia Viva.
