煤转化国家重点实验室依托中国科学院山西煤炭化学研究所，实验室于1991年由国家计委批准利用世界银行贷款筹建。 实验室基于我国经济发展对煤炭高效洁净利用的需求，结合国际发展趋势，实验室以保障我国能源安全、协调解决煤炭利用效率和生态环境问题、为洁净煤技术的创新提供科学依据和工程化基础为目标，以煤高效洁净转化为优质燃料、化学品和材料过程中的科学和技术基础为主要研究方向，重点研究煤的热物理化学、煤基液体燃料合成、煤炭利用过程中的污染物排放控制、相关产品加工新工艺和新技术、能源环境新材料制备等领域的核心科学问题和工程技术问题。实验室主要研究领域有：煤直接转化过程的化学与工程基础；煤经合成气转化的一碳化学与工程；煤转化利用中的环境化学与工程；煤转化中的理论计算与工程模拟；煤转化相关的能源环境新材料与新技术。
